–TXT's Introduction |
TOMORROW X TOGETHER (Hangul: 투모로우바이투게더; read as Tomorrow by Together; commonly known as TXT) is a five-member boy group under Big Hit Music. They debuted on March 4, 2019 with their first mini album The Dream Chapter: STAR.[1]
History[]
2018–2019: Pre-debut[]
On November 27, 2018, it was reported that Big Hit had plans to debut[2] a five-member boy group at the beginning of 2019, being the first group to debut in six years, since BTS' debut in 2013. The group would be composed by members with an average age of 17 and would reportedly have a different concept than their seniors[3]
On January 9, 2019, the agency launched a website that features a countdown clock and the text "You & Me". The interactive website also brings up the phrase, "You and I, different but together".[4] In the day after, the first member of the group was shared, Yeonjun, along with the name of the group: TXT, which stands for Tomorrow X Together and it is pronounced in Korea as "Tomorrow by Together".[5] Three days later, the next member, Soobin, was revealed.[6] Following Soobin, Hueningkai was revealed as the third member on January 15.[7] On January 17, Taehyun was revealed as the fourth member.[8] On January 20, Beomgyu, the fifth and last member, was revealed.[9]
2019: Debut and first comeback[]
On February 7, Big Hit announced the group would release their debut album titled The Dream Chapter: STAR on March 4 with a television special titled TOMORROW X TOGETHER Debut Celebration Show Presented by Mnet to be aired that same day. TXT will then hold their debut showcase at YES 24 Live Hall on March 5.[10][11] On February 18, the agency revealed the group's concept logo and member's first concept photos.[12][13][14]
Following the release, the music video for "Crown" broke the record for the most viewed K-Pop debut music video within 24 hours for a boy group, accumulating 15.1 million views.[15] Their debut EP atop the Gaon Album Chart,[16] the iTunes Top Albums chart in over 44 territories[17] and the Billboard World Albums Chart, while "Crown" debuted at number one on the Billboard World Digital Songs Chart.[18] The group debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Emerging Artists and at No. 140 on the Billboard 200 chart for the first time, making them the fastest to appear in these charts (the second fastest K-Pop group to appear in the Billboard Emerging Artist) and highest-charting debut album by any male K-pop group. The album also ranked number 3 on Oricon's Weekly Album Chart.[19] Additionally, the album went onto top the Gaon Monthly Album Chart for the month of March.[20] TXT's first music show performance was aired on March 7, 2019 on Mnet's M Countdown.[21][22] They earned their first ever music show win on SBS MTV's The Show with the single "Crown" just after a week of their debut.[23] This was soon followed by wins on M Countdown and Show Champion.[24][25]
On April 9, 2019, TXT announced its first-ever overseas tour, a six-show debut showcase in the U.S. encompassing six american cities - New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Orlando, and Atlanta - over the course of about two weeks, from May 9 to 24.[26] Tickets to all shows were sold out in less than 24 hours.[27] Following their showcase in May, the group performed at the 2019 iHeartRadio Wango Tango music concert held in Los Angeles on June 1.[28] On July 6, TXT performed at KCON 2019 NY music festival held at Madison Square Garden, New York, in front of 55,000 spectators.[29]
On August 8, 2019, it was announced by Big Hit Entertainment that they had originally planned to release a new album in August. However, due to Soobin being diagnosed with conjuctivitis (pink eye) and Yeonjun affected by back pains, it was postponed to September.[30] On August 20, Big Hit revealed Taehyun and Huening Kai had also been diagnosed with conjuctivitis, thus a reschedule of the album "has become unavoidable", citing the change in release date from September to October.[31]
On October 1, a teaser video was released for the group's first full-length album titled The Dream Chapter: MAGIC, and on October 2, a concept video was shared.[32] On October 21, the album was released, with "9 and Three Quarters (Run Away)" as its lead single.[33] Musically, the album incorporates a variety of different music genres, including R&B, tropical house, acoustic pop and hip hop.[34] Commercially, the album debuted atop the Gaon Album Chart, surpassing 124,000 sales in its first week.[35] This marked the group's second chart-topping album following their EP The Dream Chapter: Star. Trivia[]
- On April 25, it was announced that the group's fan club would be called "YOUNG ONE".[106] However, on May 6, Big Hit announced they would be revising the name due to similarities to Tiffany's fandom name "Young Ones".[107] On August 22, it was announced that the group's new fan club name would be "MOA".[108] The name is an acronym for "Moments of Alwaysness".
- According to their website, the meaning behind "Tomorrow by Together" is five individuals who "come together under one dream in hopes of building a better tomorrow".[109]
- The name of the group was derived from "PLUS X", a Korean creative agency company that has recently been gaining recognition over their design project of the BTS Youth League. It is also responsible for the logo design.[110]
- In their first ever interview with MBC's "Section TV", the group mentioned that they prefer to be called by their full name, not by their initials.[111]
- The group is both popular in South Korea and internationally.
- The average height of the members is 181.5 cm.
- According to music commentator Kim Young Dae, TXT seems to be an idol group that can dig genre closer to pop than hip-hop.
- At the Golden Disk Awards ceremony, a member of BTS, Jimin, and their choreographer Son Seong Deuk posed in a similar shape to the infinity, which is the signature of the group.
- TXT meanwhile also do OST for K-Dramas. For example the song "Your Light" for the K-Drama "Live On" or the song "Love Sight" for the K-Drama "Doom at Your Service".
- There are no fixed positions in the group except for leader.
